Make-up Practice

For our trailer we need cuts and slit throats so we decided to practice with some theatre make-up. To do this we used someone who studies theatre make-up at college to help us create a realistic slit throat. However, when we filmed it, it didn't look as realistic as we would have hoped. We think this partly to do with the angle that we shot the clip at and we think we needed more blood. Therefore, we will try it again later on.

Laura Mulvey

This is our research into Laura Mulvey and her theory of the 'Male Gaze'. The Male Gaze says that women are typically the objects rather than the possessors in a film because most films were targeted at heterosexual males

MEN AS WATCHERS
WOMEN AS WATCHED

Some of the features of the Male Gaze are:
  • the camera lingers on a woman's curves
  • events which happen to women are presented in the male point of view
  • shows women as objects

Location

This is the location that we have chosen for our teaser trailer.

Photo 10

We decided on this location as we thought that it fitted with a teenage party location, as teenage parties have been held in this location, as well as fitting with the horror genre that we have chosen. It fits with the horror genre as it is in a basement and used to be the servants quarters to the rest of the house.

We think that this location would convey a horror genre as it's dark, has brick walls, is old and had cob webs making it look like it has been abandoned.

We were particularly interested in the windows shown in Photo 2 as they have bars across them meaning that there is no escape out the windows. This is good for our trailer as it means that the victims are trapped. This links to Photo 6.

Photo 6 shows the door to the outside. This corner of the basement is dark and mysterious. The door has two bolts, one across the top and one across the bottom. The window on the door is also barred. This reinforces our idea of being trapped down in the cellar with no escape from the killer.

Photo 7 particularly shows the genre of our teaser trailer as it shows weapons hung along a wall. We could use this in our trailer as the murderers base for killing his victims as there is a choice of saws at his disposal.

Poster deconstruction: Prom Night

When creating a poster we looked at different styles and found a relatable poster to deconstruct in order to correctly put together a successful poster. We looked at the 'Prom Night' poster and its elements which gave the audiences affects and suggestions about the film.

  •        Bright element’s to draw attention, such as white aspects or red writing.
  •      Palette colour represents horror – red, white, grey, black
  •   Not seeing the whole picture or what is happening but showing something understandable – a woman screaming or shouting.
  •      Red title – blood, passion, evil.
  •      Dark background to make it stand out more
  •     Neat font, good size, draws attention to the title but doesn't distract audience from the picture.
  •     Juxtaposition of the tiara which represents beauty and glamour which are normally seen with happiness and joy, and the expression of the woman’s face which is fear.
  •      Position of the tiara and her messy hair shows distress or violent struggle.
  •   Her eyes are not shown, meaning the audience are more focused on the connotations of fear and her mouth which represents fear as an emotion.
  •     The picture takes up the majority of the picture, especially the mouth, which shows the importance of the emotion of fear which will surround the film.

Characters

For our teaser trailer, we need one main killer and various female victims. As well as this we will have numerous extras dressed in Halloween costumes.

Main protagonist
Our main character will a clown. They will be dressed in a scary clown costume with a frightening mask. We took inspiration from other films featuring clowns as their main killer.

We have chosen this clown costume as we think that it looks scary and threatening. We think that the mask will create fear in the audience as it has an element of disguise as it covers the killers face. This would be scary to viewers as most people are afraid of the unknown.

Vulnerable character costumes

We have decided to have a promiscuous character in our trailer. This is because in almost all horror movies there is a character which comes across as vulnerable to the killer as they have a lack of clothing on. They will often be the easiest victim. This is the character that will consume a lot of alcohol and makes lots of mistakes, leading them to be one of the first to die.

Edible Blood Testing

Before we start filming our trailer, we wanted to test out different recipes for making edible fake blood. To do this we found two edible recipes on the internet and tested them out. We also created two of our own recipes which we thought would look effective when we filmed.

From this video we will decide which blood recipe we think looks the most effective and recreate it when we come to filming our trailer.

Blood Recipes

For our teaser trailer we will need fake blood. We need blood that can be on the actors clothes as well as fake blood that can be in their mouths so it will need to be non-toxic if it gets eaten. We have three blood recipes, two non-toxic and one that is inedible, that we are going to try out.

Recipe 1
(Non-Toxic)
  1. Combine 1 part water with 3 parts golden syrup
  2. Gradually mix in a few drops of red food coloring (add a few drops of blue or green)
  3. Stir in some corn flour to thicken it
  4. Leave in a warm environment for 10 minutes to thicken even more

Recipe 2
(Edible Chocolate Blood)
  1. Combine golden syrup with red food coloring until it begins to look like real blood
  2. Add a small amount of cocoa powder to darken the shade of blood
  3. If the blood is too thick add water to thin it, if the blood is too thin add in a few pinches of flour or corn flour to thicken it

Recipe 3
(Inedible)
  1. Use 3 parts alcohol-free water-soluble hair gel
  2. Mix in motor or radiator lubricant until it turns watery
  3. Mix in half of the mixture with red food coloring
  4. Add a small amount of chocolate syrup to darken and thicken the blood

  • For all of the recipes, condensed milk can be added to make the mixture more opaque.
  • Dishwasher detergent can be added to blood that is going on clothes to stop it from staining.

Soundtrack

This track was made specifically for our trailer. It includes clown laughter and fairground noises as this gives connotations of clowns and we think this compliment our film well and add to the horror.
